Summer Camps

Acting Out Theatre Company's summer camp programs are a time for young people to have fun, gain self-confidence, work together as a group and learn life-long public speaking skills.

For our full day camps, rehearsals take place over the course of one or two weeks. The cast meets every day from 9 AM - 3 PM. Over the course of the week or weeks, the ensemble will be guided through a curriculum that allows them devise, or create, their own show. The program culminates with a performance on the stage for family and friends at 2:30 PM on the last day of camp.

For our half day camps, classes take place 9 AM - 12 PM over the course of one week. In these process-based camps, our young actors will explore the world of theatre through a specific piece of text. By bringing the page to the stage, they will learn stage directions, basic theatre terms, and fun theatre games, to name a few. Every day they will bring home a design project they created themselves and on the last day we invite you into the classroom at 11:30 AM for a sharing.

The goal for the camp is to create an atmosphere for your actor that's engaging, inspiring, and collaborative.

This camp is specifically designed with our youngest actors in mind. Using games, songs, arts and crafts, and of course, the Bard’s words, we’ll have fun learning the basics of acting. We'll finish the week up with a short sharing for family and friends at 11:30 on Friday.

  • Camp is led by our Artistic Director Emily Norman and one other professional teaching artist. With a maximum number of 15 campers, there would be a 1:7 teacher/student ratio.

  • Actors should bring a lunch, two snacks, and a full water bottle.

  • There will be a good deal of movement during camp, so we encourage the actors to wear sneakers or securely fitted sandals. In addition if actors choose to wear a skirt or dress, we ask that they wear shorts underneath.

  • We rehearse and perform at Mountain View United Methodist Church in South Boulder. Our rehearsals take place in room 111/113 and our workshops are presented on the stage in Barker Hall. Weather permitting, we’ll have lunch outdoors and get some energy out on the playground.

  • Actors will wear clothes they already own for their base and actors will create their own costume piece that represents their character. All supplies are provided by Acting Out Theatre Company.

  • The actors will all participate in creating a backdrop. The creation of props will be dependent on the workshop the actors create.

  • Campers will start the day with a group warm up. They will participate in a variety of classes throughout the day such as movement, acting, improvisation and playmaking. This curriculum will allow our actors to make creative choices with their bodies and voices, explore spatial awareness and establish a collaborative ensemble. The group will then create a brand new piece of theatre using the camp theme as the starting point. Let the imaginative fun begin!
